Why do you add B12 to your injectable Semaglutide?
Vitamin B12 in Compounded GLP-1 Medications
At DirectMeds, our compounded injectable GLP-1 medications include Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin). Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that helps your body:
- Make healthy red blood cells
- Support nerve function
- Produce DNA and support normal metabolism
Many adults are at risk of low B12 levels, especially those with certain digestive conditions, dietary patterns or chronic illnesses. Including B12 in your injectable plan can help maintain healthy B12 levels in people who need it. This does not replace the need to test for deficiency or to follow your provider’s medical advice.
Why B12?
When Vitamin B12 levels are low, people can experience symptoms such as:
- Fatigue or low energy
- Anemia or low red blood cell counts
- Tingling, numbness or nerve-related symptoms (neuropathy)
- Mood or cognitive changes, such as low mood, irritability or “brain fog”
Certain chronic conditions (for example, some gastrointestinal, thyroid or diabetic conditions) and some medications can increase the risk of B12 deficiency. In people who are deficient or at higher risk, B12 injections can help restore normal levels and improve deficiency-related symptoms. Your provider can check your B12 levels and decide whether B12 supplementation is appropriate as part of your overall treatment plan.
Potential Side Effects of B12
Most people tolerate B12 injections well, but side effects can occur. These may include:
- Mild soreness, redness or itching at the injection site
- Mild nausea, diarrhea or stomach upset
- Headache or feeling slightly dizzy
These effects are usually mild and temporary. If side effects do not go away, get worse or bother you, contact your healthcare provider.
Rarely, more serious allergic reactions can occur, especially in people with a cobalt or Vitamin B12 allergy. Call emergency services right away if you develop:
- Trouble breathing
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
- A widespread rash or hives
If you have concerns or side effects
If you notice symptoms after your injections or have questions about B12 in your medication, please reach out to the DirectMeds nursing team or your usual healthcare provider. They can:
- Review your symptoms and medical history
- Decide whether any changes are needed to your dosing schedule
- Advise you on whether additional medications or other strategies are appropriate
Do not change your dose of semaglutide or B12, or start or stop any prescription or over-the-counter medications (including antihistamines or nausea remedies), without talking to your provider.
