Why am I not losing weight like I thought I would?
Everyone Loses Weight Differently
There is no standard amount that can be said in terms of how much weight any given person will lose. This is all dependent on your current weight and how much calorie restriction is done. The medications work by helping with appetite suppression making it easier to restrict calories. Weight loss is essentially mathematical, meaning that if you are burning more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. How much weight is lost is dependent on how much you are burning and how much you are consuming, which is where diet and exercise come into play - but these medications help with significantly suppressing your appetite making it much easier to restrict your calories. Since this is one of the biggest components in weight loss, appetite suppression leads to calorie restriction, which leads to weight loss generally speaking.
Weight Loss Numbers Vary
We have had patients that lose 1-2 lbs per month and we have had patients that lose 10-20 lbs per month. Everyone's body behaves and responds differently. It can be unhealthy to lose weight too quickly, so a safe, ideal target range would be 3-5 lbs per month. With the initial/starter doses, it is not uncommon to not lose any weight. The initial doses are for priming the body, so oftentimes there may be no weight loss for the first 2 months or so as we are working to titrate (wean) the dose up. We cannot titrate the dose up too quickly as this causes issues with side effects and the body does not have time to adjust to the medication. So you should expect to lose less weight (or possibly no weight) in the first 2 months and then gradual and steady weight loss from there.
