How Do I Prime My Intranasal Medication Before Use?

Priming prepares the nasal spray pump to deliver a measured amount of medication with each activation.

The priming process depends on whether your medication arrives ready to use or requires reconstitution.

Ready-to-use nasal sprays

Before the first dose, point the spray away from your face and activate the pump until a fine mist appears. This generally requires approximately 2–3 pumps.

Nasal sprays requiring reconstitution

After mixing the medication, point the spray away from your face and activate the pump approximately 3–5 times, until a fine mist appears.

Once the freshly mixed medication has been primed, it does not need to be primed again immediately before administration.

If you have not used your nasal spray for several days, prime the pump with one activation before administering your next dose.

Always follow the instructions included with your medication and your prescription label.
